The more time that elapses from the moment of a crime, the muddier the facts can get. This is why convicting and punishing individuals for crimes that happened decades ago can often lead to innocent men and women going to jail.
Recently, a jury in Collin County, Texas, found a 38-year-old man guilty of sex crimes that were committed back in 2000. That man has been sentenced to life behind bars in the case, which saw its share of contradicting reports.

A Texas man will serve an eight-year prison sentence after being convicted of drunk driving. The driver allegedly struck a parked car and caused several more vehicles to hit each other, but his attorney argues that the sentence is unfair as his client did not hurt anyone.
It is likely that the man's harsh sentence is related to a previous drunk driving conviction in 1998, stemming from an accident that left another person dead. Authorities claim that on that occasion, the suspect was drunk driving while fleeing Dallas police officers. His car allegedly struck another car, killing a man. Additionally, the driver of a third car was injured, as was the suspect's passenger. The suspect, who was 20 years old at the time, pled guilty to intoxication manslaughter. His probation ended in 2009.

A 35-year-old woman from the Dallas area will face charges after allegedly causing an accident while driving drunk. Police arrested the woman and charged her with DWI after she reportedly caused a two-car accident. They believe the woman's impairment was responsible for the crash. No one was injured.
According to an officer with the Huntsville Police Department, police received a call regarding a dark-colored car traveling at unsafe speeds in the northbound lanes of Interstate 45. The officer claims the car was traveling at approximately 95 mph. It is unclear if he used a radar gun to assess the car's speed. His visual observation could likely be scrutinized.

As the upcoming general election approaches, issues surrounding voting are frequent discussions among many people across the country. News cycles are being dominated by stories about what to expect over the next several months. On a more local level, the fiancée of a former Dallas County Justice of the Peace was recently found not guilty of criminal charges for supposedly committing an act of voter fraud.
According to prosecutors assigned to the case, the woman apparently voted in a part of Dallas area where she did not actually live. The charge emerged from a larger probe launched against the former politician's entire family in the wake of his defeat of an incumbent justice of the peace in a 2010 primary election. The judge indicated that this particular woman was not guilty of voting illegally; rather, she was just caught up in a larger investigation.
